Civic; a flagship for Britain’s Ocean City
A 230-metre flagship for Britain’s Ocean City.
Plymouth City Council asked us to bring the Civic Centre’s transformation to life with a monumental hoarding campaign — the first and largest showcase of the city’s new Britain’s Ocean City identity by DNCO. Bold colour, big storytelling, and a Grade II-listed icon re-introduced to the city with confidence. A landmark project for a landmark building — and the start of an exciting new chapter for Plymouth.

A landmark wrapped in a new identity
We’ve always loved the Plymouth Civic Centre — so it felt like an honour when Plymouth City Council asked 51 Studio to design a bold, large-scale hoarding campaign for the site. Spanning around 230 metres, the hoardings became a sweeping canvas of storytelling and colour, carrying the city’s new branding under Britain’s Ocean City, developed by DNCO.
Given the Civic Centre’s near-iconic status — a post-war emblem of ambition and a Grade II-listed gem — this was arguably the largest and most visible execution of the new city-wide brand to date. With so many eyes on it — from local residents and stakeholders, we knew it had to resonate.
We’re genuinely very excited about the plans for the Civic Centre and Plymouth’s city-centre regeneration. There’s a talented and committed team behind it. We don’t know about you — but we can’t wait to watch the transformation unfold.
